Shirley A. Ruffalo (Nee Embser) age 89, Homewood resident of 62 years, passed peacefully at home on January 14, 2024. Beloved wife of the late Dominic Ruffalo Jr., mother of Dominic (Carole) Ruffalo III and Susan (Philip) Scroppo. Cherished grandmother of Dominic IV, Joseph, and Anthony Ruffalo, Jessica and Nicholas Scroppo. Fond aunt to many nieces and nephews. Cousin, neighbor and friend to many.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Leon and Helen (Knoll) Embser and sisters Rosemary Cordes and Eileen Williams.

Shirley was born July 2, 1934, in Harvey, IL. After graduating from Thornton High School in 1952, Shirley started her working career with the Illinois Central Railroad working with IBM. After the birth of her children, she worked for Swift Computer Services/Global Data for the majority of her career, eventually retiring from Barr Services in data entry management.

She was very creative and could make almost anything whether through sewing, constructing or crafting. She was an avid gardener, decorator and wonderful cook. In her later years, she enjoyed attending St. Joseph Parish where she was a member for over 60 years. She loved taking rides, shopping and talking with people along the way. Most of all, she was the most dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt who in return was loved and cherished by her family and friends.

She was a wonderful example of a life lived with honesty, hard work, humor and most of all love.

I knew Shirley for many, many years in Homewood, Ill. She was a very faithful member at St Joseph’s Catholic In Homewood (now St. John Neuman) She was also a very faithful member and of the Sanctuary committee. She and her sister Eileen Williams always had good fun things to say, and were very joyful. Their creative things were amazing. Of course, there was Sunday evening at the Homewood Dairy Queen!!! Have missed her a lot and when I pass her home, will say a prayer.
    Rest in peace. Magda
